NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Cochise County Sheriff Joanna Brady’s professional and personal lives collide when her college-age daughter is involved in a missing persons case in this evocative and atmospheric mystery in J. A. Jance’s New York Times bestselling suspense series, set in the beautiful desert country of the American Southwest.

When Jennifer Brady returns to Northern Arizona University for her sophomore year, she quickly becomes a big sister to her new roommate, Beth Rankin, a brilliant yet sheltered sixteen-year-old freshman. For a homeschooled Beth, college is her first taste of both freedom and unfettered access to the internet, and Jenny is concerned that she’s too naïve and rebellious for her own good.

Her worries are well-founded because one day Beth vanishes, prompting Jenny to alert campus authorities, local police, and her mom, Sheriff Joanna Brady—who calls in a favor. Beth is found, but Jenny’s concern has unwittingly put her in the crosshairs of a criminal bent on revenge.

With Christmas vacation approaching, and Beth at war with her parents, Jenny invites Beth to the shelter of the Brady home. While Joanna is sympathetic, she’s caught up in a sensitive case—an officer-involved shooting that has placed the lives of two young children in jeopardy—leaving her stretched thin to help a fragile young woman recently gone missing and endangered.

Review

“Fans of police procedurals with a Southwestern flair will love Joanna’s determination to manage marriage, motherhood, and policing in this 19th Joanna Brady book.”
-- Library Journal

“The two parallel cases provide plenty of action, while keeping a premium on character studies and violence to a minimum. Once again, the compassionate, intelligent Joanna balances a busy home life and a complex job with aplomb. This long-running series consistently entertains.” -- Publishers Weekly

“What is refreshing is the way [Jance] shows how law enforcement are not just numbers and robots but people with families and a personal home-life. As with all her novels, readers will not be disappointed.”  -- MilitaryPress.com

I''ve read every Joanna Brady book and it always feels like I''m coming home. One thing I Ioved was how the author brought in many of the characters especially those who had been around awhile but I had the distinct feeling that Ms Jance was closing out this series and it made me sad. I''ve never been crazy about Joanna''s daughter so didn''t like that so much of the story dwelt on her. The ending about Jenny was a nice surprise though. Over the years I have not liked how Ms Jance writes mothers in the story (going back to her own mother) especially when she puts down most mothers but writes Joanna as a good mother which she doesn''t seem to be. Joanna is never home before her young children are put to bed by the housekeeper and she gets up after her six year old son is put on the bus for school....Joanna''s husband, Butch, is an interesting character but the author writes him like a doormat to Joanna who waits on her. The procedurals and plot in the story are great and enjoyable reading but in most of this author''s novels her strong feelings about societal issues come across which is not what I want to read about.

If I could only choose 5 authors to read for the rest of time, anything by J.A.Jance would definitely be one.
Her books keep me intrigued, fascinated, but they don''t use up excessive words just to fill the page. She writes about things that can actually take place instead of making it so far fetched that I just want to close it up and not even finish it. I like the way she brings the "secondary characters for lack of a better term" in and out of each story so you don''t forget them. In the Brady novels, she reminds you that while Joanna is a public official, she is a mother, wife and a woman also and I am happy to see that. So many times that is not given the importance it should.
This book touched on domestic violence and child neglect and I for one believe you can never be too educated in showing the dangers of it.
Thank you J.A. Jance, I can hardly wait until your next one comes out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Brady mystery.

It gallops along, touching on the themes of cyberstalking, overprotective parents, family, mother-daughter relationships and many other issues.

I particularly liked the focus on Jenny. As a rancher and rider myself, I like the freedom and connection of riding horses and finding in that time with my horse and nature fresh viewpoints on concerns.
There was also quite a lot of time devoted to Butch and Joanna as real people in a busy and loving relationship.

That does not even begin to touch on who is Missing and Endangered. It’s a great story, worth reading and re-reading for your enjoyment.

Are we going to see a new series focusing on Jenny Brady?
If so, put me on the list to be first in line.
Thank you, J. A. Jance, for a great read in the time of the pandemic.

MISSING AND ENDANGERED by J A Jance
Jance is one of my favorite authors and in this novel with Sheriff Joanna Brady as lead protagonist she does not disappoint. Brady is sheriff of a county near the Mexican border in Arizona. Murder is complicated by the retirement of her lead detective, endangered children and Joanna’s own daughter.
Jance’s characters are as integral to her stories as the requisite murders and mayhem. Her characters change and adapt as their world changes just as in the real world. I read Jance as much for Brady (and Beaumont and Reynolds, et al, her other main stays) as for the intriguing plots and heart pounding conclusions. You won’t be disappointed.

One definition of a good day for me is when a new novel from J. A. Jance arrives on my doorstep (literally, delivered by the folks at Amazon). As I have noted in other reviews of Jance’s work, I have been enjoying her splendid novels since I picked up the first one in a used book shop in Copán, Honduras. I am sure her many fans feel pretty much the same way as I do. All I need to see is the notice of the publication of a new novel by her and it is an automatic purchase. I follow all of her ongoing series. The one under review here is in the Joanna Brady series, the one that follows the work of her fictional sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona. For folks not familiar with this county in Arizona, it is the southeasternmost county in the state, whose county seat is Bisbee, where Jance was raised and Sheriff Brady has her office. Cochise County is named after one of the best-known and respected Apache leaders who held out against the intrusions by European Americans and is the location of the Chiricahua National Monument, which encompasses the Chiricahua Mountains. These mountains are the location of the American Museum of Natural History’s Southwest Research Station, located near Portal, Arizona, lying near the border with New Mexico.

Jance’s new novel, entitled Missing and Endangered, involves two intertwined plotlines, one involving Sheriff Brady’s daughter Jennifer, now a sophomore at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and the other tied up in an officer-involved shooting, which has left two children in precarious circumstances with a mother not in the best shape to care for them. Joanna’s daughter Jenny becomes involved in a serious situation in which her university roommate becomes embroiled, which complicates a trip the two young women have planned to Bisbee for Christmas. The officer in that OIS is himself badly injured in the encounter, which keeps Joanna running back and forth to the hospital where he is under care.

As is often the case, Joanna is stretched to the limit both professionally and personally, with her family life often having to take a back seat as she struggles to carry out her policing duties. The reader will wish to determine how Joanna deals with her responsibilities as the county sheriff and those to her family consisting of husband and thriller author Butch and her children. If other readers are anything like I am, especially the older I grow, tears will fall along the way as the story plays itself out. As with every other Jance book I have read during her lengthy career, I am happy to recommend Missing and Endangered to her other habitual readers and to anyone else who enjoys novels that provide excitement while plucking at the heartstrings.

Daughter Jennifer at long last is developing as a character in her own right, which I do like.
As for some of the others, our heroine/author really brought out the bottom of the pot. I didn’t see a redeeming feature in any of them.
Oh and a small error-see if you can find where she said Johanna when is should be Jennifer.
Note to the author-WoO is Not creepy, he’s just a genial fraud.
