Product Description

Diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the process of examining the body to diagnose disease and differentiate patterns under the guidance of the fundamental theories of TCM. It is a bridge that connects the basics of TCM with all branches of clinical medicine and includes inspecting the symptoms or manifestations, analyzing the changes, understanding the pathomechanisms, and predicting the transformation of diseases. TCM diagnosis consists of two major areas of study, examination and testing (zhên) and decision and judgment (duàn). Examination and testing techniques are used to collect information from the patient. Decision and judgment uses this information, which is sorted, analyzed, synthe¬sized, and reasoned on the basis of TCM theory. This book is organized around the four pillars of TCM diagnosis: inspection, inquiry, listening and smelling, and palpation. In this text, each aspect is explained in a clear and systematic manner, with generous use of tables and illustrations. This is followed by a series of review questions for deeper understanding. A comprehensive self-examination consisting of 200 multiple choice questions, with a separate key to the answers, tests the reader s understanding of the important points of each aspect of diagnosis. These questions, many of which are presented in case study format, will help students prepare for the board exams.

Review

"Qiao Yi and Al Stone, both veteran educators, have risen to the task of explaining TCM diagnosis in both overview and its intricate details. This Study Guide goes beyond simply translating and reiterating what has already been written in other texts by showing diagnosis as an interactive process with zang-fu and TCM theory. The authors years of experience in teaching this material which has been peer reviewed by leading scholars of Chinese medicine is reflected in both the content and its presentation. More than just a dry compilation of facts, this book clarifies many of the ambiguities left by other TCM texts. Highly recommended for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Awesome book, makes TCM diagnosis as simple as a day on the beach.

This book is superb. Very well written, easy to follow. Near Maciocia''s work (whois also superb, but dense) it is like a romance. I loved it and recommend. Would love to find more books that make TCM so easy.

A TCM practitioner once told me that the highest level of TCM diagnosis requires an encyclopedic mind. Visual inspection, smelling, asking and palpating are the only "tools" that a TCM practiitioner has. This book is divided into 4 main parts. What to look out for? What to ask the patient? What smells to detect? What do the different kinds of pulses indicate?

Through all these diagnostic methods, the practitioner should be able to get a coherent picture of the syndrome that is affecting the patient. This book has accurate information, very well-presented with numerous tables and flow charts. But make no mistake, TCM diagnosis is anything but straightforward. Understanding the concepts and remembering the diagnostic reasoning in this book requires a lot of commitment. Definitely an essential text for any serious student of TCM.

Loved this book! It breaks down the foundations of TCM theory, better than what I was explained to me in at my institution.

The TCM Diagnosis Study Guide is definetly one for your bookshelf. This book makes a wonderful companion to other books on diagnosis, as it is an excellent resource for further study. The diagrams, summaries and charts make it an absolute necessity if you are more of a visual learner.

The inclusion of "questions and answers for deeper insight" at the end of each section provide just that, deeper understanding of the concepts presented. The 200 question multiple choice test at the end of the book (answer key provided) will definetly help you to see how well you understand the material.

I have done a lot of research into books on TCM, and I have found these 3 are the best to use in conjunction:

1- Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis Study Guide
2- Chinese Traditional Herbal Medicine Volume I Diagnosis and Treatment
3- Chinese Traditional Herbal Medicine Vol.II Materia Medica & Herbal Ref

These 3 books make a wonderful "home study" course.

This is a phenomenal resource that is an absolute must have for anyone interested in TCM. The woman seems to value charts and flowcharts as much as I do and is a master at creating them. Her explanations are very clear and totally accessible (provided you look up a few medical terms as you go along). This is one of those rare books that has you grasping the material super fast. She''s clearly a gifted teacher and I''d give her 10 stars if I could. I''m a Westerner self-learning TCM. This book makes other TCM books much easier to understand. If you''re a Westerner eager for good TCM resources, Peter Holmes'' "Western Energetics" (2 book series) is a must have, and you''ll get way more out of his stuff after Qiao helps you understand the "why" behind trying to sink the qi.
