Description

Product Description

ABOUT THE BOOK: Introductory Statistics follows the scope and sequence of a one-semester, introduction to statistics course and is geared toward students majoring in fields other than math or engineering. This text assumes students have been exposed to intermediate algebra, and it focuses on the applications of statistical knowledge rather than the theory behind it. The foundation of this textbook is Collaborative Statistics, by Barbara Illowsky and Susan Dean, which has been widely adopted. Introductory Statistics includes innovations in art, terminology, and practical applications, all with a goal of increasing relevance and accessibility for students. We strove to make the discipline meaningful and memorable, so that students can draw a working knowledge from it that will enrich their future studies and help them make sense of the world around them. The text also includes Collaborative Exercises, integration with TI-83,83+,84+ Calculators, technology integration problems, and statistics labs.

I bought this book based on the number of positive reviews, hoping I could us it to teach my stats class. My initial impression is that the book could be much better formatted. The pages are generally too busy with different colors, boxes and other stylistic cues, and line spacing is irregular. The formatting of the mathematical equations is poorly done, eg the bar symbol for the mean is very badly typeset. I''ve not yet had a close look at the actual content except for the section on correlation. The style is similar to many modern text books on statistics, the recipe is taught but with little reference as to why it works. Knowing why helps one understand when it is appropriate to use a test or not and also gives much more insight into the test itself. This approach doesn''t match my teaching style so I won''t be using this book for class.

This is a free textbook. Despite that, it is a superb introduction with extensive examples and practice problems. It is legitimately free as a PDF but I purchased it for $0.00 as a Kindle edition so I can display it in class, copy out a question, or even look up a word. Formats perfectly on the Kindle. I used this text this summer to expand coverage of the normal distribution and Z-score problems beyond that offered in the required business statistics course textbook. If I teach a straight stat course for 2nd-year students I would select this text. It also articulates with MyOpenMath via a Udemy course so that online students can have a genuine textbook.

There is a number of errors throughout this book that I had to report via the OpenStax website. It was very strange to be using a college-level text and find so many glaring (roughly 15) mathematical errors in calculations throughout. My professor had to email almost weekly throughout the course with this.

Beyond that, the text is laid out relatively well and is easy to follow. The calculator explanations are thorough enough for anyone that has a rudimentary knowledge of any TI calculator.

It''s an Okay Stats book - But should have worked out solutions
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2019
It''s an okay book for a stats class, but it definitely needs more worked-out solutions to sample problems, as this is limiting its value as a statistics textbook.

I just finished College Statistics 2023 and wanted a hardcover book for a second perspective from my class paperback rental. I am very happy with this book as a desktop reference and like that it also incorporates the TI 84 calculator. It is well organized and I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to stay proficient in Statistics, the formulas and symbols appendix is more complete than my textbook was. Thank you for keeping this very reasonably priced.

I''m entirely satisfied with the actual purchase and shipping, it''s merely the book itself I take exception to. That said, it was required for my coursework and was after all cheap. Frankly, the price is right for this book, because it is NOT the level of instruction or quality I would expect from a college textbook.

Every other college level math book I have used provided enough of a primer on formulas and techniques to learn autodidactically. This book often gives a brief history of the techniques, then the majority of the chapters will be example problems for you to work on your own, I honestly would have been lost without my notes from class.

A very detailed FREE course book.

As I got this for my kindle, initially, the text was tiny. Thankfully, I enhanced it with one of kindle''s magnifying modes. Once I''d sorted things out, I was able to (comfortably) read, the text of this course book. Very pleased. Thanks.

Kindle edition isn''t compatible with Kindle devices
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2019
Giving this one star because, although it''s free for Kindle, the Kindle version isn''t actually compatible with Kindle Devices. I can get it delivered to my phone, or even Kindle for Mac, but not my actual Kindle (a Paperwhite that''s three or four years old). Ridiculous.
