Product Description

On the heels of his New York Times bestselling Stories I Only Tell My Friends, Rob Lowe is back with an entertaining collection that “invites readers into his world with easy charm and disarming frankness” (Kirkus Reviews).

After the incredible response to his acclaimed bestseller, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, Rob Lowe was convinced to mine his experiences for even more stories. The result is Love Life, a memoir about men and women, actors and producers, art and commerce, fathers and sons, movies and TV, addiction and recovery, sex and love. Among the adventures he describes in these pages are:

· His visit, as a young man, to Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion, where the naïve actor made a surprising discovery in the hot tub.
· The time, as a boy growing up in Malibu, he discovered a vibrator belonging to his best friend’s mother.
· What it’s like to be the star and producer of a flop TV show.
· How an actor prepares, for Californification, Parks and Recreation, and numerous other roles.
· His hilarious account of coaching a kid’s basketball team dominated by helicopter parents.
· How his great, great, great, great, great grandfather may have inspired everything from his love of The West Wing to his taste in classic American architecture.
· His first visit to college, with his son, who is going to receive the education his father never got.
· The time a major movie star stole his girlfriend.

Linked by common themes and his philosophical perspective on love—and life—Lowe’s writing “is loaded with showbiz anecdotes, self-deprecating tales, and has a general sweetness” ( New York Post).

Review

“[Lowe] skillfully weaves stories together with common themes and a philosophical perspective. … Fans who fear he gave up all the good stuff in the first book will be pleasantly surprised. … Lowe’s candor and willingness to admit his flaws create an authentic voice. His easy writing style will hook readers who won’t judge his book by the handsome man on its cover.” ― Associated Press

“Lowe''s self-effacing and straightforward assessments of his own foibles and weaknesses, combined with first-rate storytelling skills. . . .make [Love Life] still feel like a night on the town with a well-connected, charismatic friend with more tales to spill. . . .[I]t''s sweet, and he includes very funny accounts. . . . Showing how well he can laugh at himself. ” ― USA Today

“Lowe addresses his life with a welcome levity. This book confirms that Lowe is more than just a pretty face." ― Elle

"[Lowe] writes with perspective and humorous self-effacement.” ― Entertainment Weekly

“Not just pretty but witty and wise.” ― AARP Magazine

“[Love Life] is loaded with showbiz anecdotes, self-deprecating tales and has a general sweetness that some readers might not be expecting from Lowe.” ― New York Post

"Engaging, relatable… entertaining and admirably frank." ― The Washington Post

“A savvy writer with a quick wit, Lowe invites readers into his world with easy charm and disarming frankness.” ― Kirkus Reviews

"Lowe had been reborn as a winning memoirist." ― Booklist

“Somehow Lowe manages to describe a visit to the Playboy Mansion and an unpleasant grade-school sleepover next to the manatee tank at Sea World with equal enthusiasm.” ― Book Forum

“If you love Rob Lowe, you''ll love his "Love Life."…. His self-effacing humor keeps the pace brisk.” ― Tulsa World

“The fact that his second book is every bit as engaging as the first proves his point. I’m betting he could do an equally fine job on a third.” ― Miami Herald

“Lowe vividly depicts what it was like to be a 19-year-old Hollywood heartthrob. . . . As in the best celebrity memoirs and musings, Love Life is sprinkled with star power. . . . [Lowe] spills secrets and private thoughts with eloquence.” ― Bookpage

“Lowe is a gifted storyteller who uses humor and self-deprecation to draw readers in, and keeps their attention with fun tales of Hollywood behind-the-scenes.” ― Carpool Candy

“[An] easygoing but thoughtful memoir.” ― All You

“Incredible. … This isn’t your typical celebrity written book. This was a fun read and very well written, that’ll have you laughing and shedding a tear along the way.” ― Red Carpet Crash

“A wild ride of a memoir by Rob Lowe that will leave you amused, fascinated and ultimately charmed.” ― Shelf Awareness

“[Lowe is] an interesting and perceptive writer.” ― Daily Mail

“An interesting read, and a page-turner. Lowe has an amazing insight about life and what is important.” ― Family Choice Awards

“Love Life is just as genially and charmingly guarded as its predecessor. … [Lowe] is admirably self-aware.” ― Good Men Project

especially if you haven''t read his "first" autobiography.

During the eighties, Lowe was at least as famous for being a litigation as he was for his acting. In fact, although he chooses not to mention it in "Love Life," a certain video of him in bed with a very young lady caused such scandal that it threatened to bring an early end to his career. Such a story is hardly worth mention today, but at the time it was a MASSIVE deal. I''m just as certain that a number of people will pick this title up hoping for a tell-all sexploits tome as I am that the choice of the title was no accident. Anyone looking for salacious details of Hollywood debauchery will need to renew their hunt elsewhere. While Lowe doesn''t whitewash his past, or deny it in any way, he apparently respects both his wife and his children too much to drag them through the sordid details of his early exploits

So what exactly does the reader get that makes "Love Life" worth the cover price? For openers, fans of Rob Lowe will find him to be surprisingly candid and open about the life mistakes he has made in life that in many ways were the underlying causes of his formerly notorious reputation. He is equally forthcoming in sharing the lessons he learned in the process of recovery from his addictive demons. As a result, though some may start this book hoping to titter at the immaturities of the Rich and Famous, those that continue to read may just come away either inspired or learning things that will help them tosurvive their own daily struggles.

Although the "real" Rob Lowe is no therapist, he has far more depth than the "super-creepy Rob Lowe" he currently plays in satellite tv ads. This is a good thing. After finishing either of his two books you almost feel that Lowe is in fact, a good family friend - warts and all. And THAT is a very good thing.

Anyone who''s ever enjoyed seeing Rob Lowe on TV or in the movies will really enjoy his memoirs. They present him as being much more down to earth than you might expect and include fascinating side stories about the movie biz. I had especially enjoyed seeing Lowe in the miniseries The Stand and the extra info he includes about that role would have been worth the entire purchase price for me. I appreciate the fact that he writes about himself as if he knows he has human flaws. This makes him seem honest, and that makes me like him even more than I already did. BTW if his books aren''t perfect, if he goes off on tangents here and there, to me that said he wrote them himself, instead of using a ghostwriter, and it made me feel like I was really hearing Rob Lowe describing his memories. (If I had one criticism it would be that in the digital version the photos could have been placed better. Photos from the preceding chapter are placed next to the first page of the new chapter, and this is distracting.)

I like Rob Lowe less after reading this. I''ve always loved the roles he''s done. I thought this would be a little more genuine, a little less Hollywood PR plastic. He is insightful about his addictions and about being a child actor. But most of this reveals nothing new or interesting. Mainly platitudes and reiterations of how lucky he is, which is nice if you''re writing a card to your wife but not particularly interesting. You definitely get the sense there are stories to share and things he could say by this is not a place or he will say any of them

Good old Robe Lowe. Is there anything he can''t do? I enjoyed his first book, Stories I only Tell My Friends, and I knew I''d enjoy his second offering. Lowe seems to be a man who has found peace and balance in a life where peace and balance are hard to find. Anyone who is as breathtakingly handsome as Lowe has a couple of strikes against him. We all expect him to be a total himbo, a narcissist party boy with a shallow intellect and a cut bod. The real Lowe is smart, funny, an astute businessman and an excellent actor whose talent has risen above his youthful pretty boy looks and party on past. Sober for years, he''s happily married and the proud father of two sons. He''s also a great raconteur in the tradtion of great actors like Richard Harris. His stories of his life and friends are entertaining, but never indiscreet. He doesn''t write tell alls. He doesn''t need to. His work is literate, entertaining and written from the heart. I always like reading what he has to say. He''s the kind of guy you''d like to have lunch with, just to listen to him tell you stories about what he''s seen and done.

An original Brat Packer who could have led a typical Hollywood life (Demi Moore) of self importance, peaks and valleys, and something missing. And Lowe was clearly on his way to this life starting as a teen idol and all that comes with it. But somewhere after his infamous threesome with an underage girl, Lowe dries out and marries a solid, stable person which has led to an exceptional family life and career. Sure, most might consider it a disappointment considering how bright was the early star (a particular passage talks of his not being on a magazine cover for 10 years), but beneath the surface was a very intelligent man looking to escape and show the world there was more to him than a pretty face. And he was successful in this endeavor! And this book is the proof.

The structure of the book is general ramblings of what is important to him and revisits to his career and other important parts of his life. And it works! Of particular interest to me was the JFK Jr story both in the initial meeting and later just prior to the death of JFK Jr. This is a very touching story. Also, commented on is his outlook on acting with tidbits throughout on his approach as well as others.

Overall this is a very good introspective look by a entertainer, but more importantly, by a solid guy who has found his calling, place in the world, and apparently true happiness away from the fast lane.

I read Rob''s first book, as a fan and contemporary, and I felt it was quite a fulfilling "overflight" of his experience early in his career. I would recommend it to any 80s person. My gripe at the time is that Rob didn''t get into the darker passages of his life as an alcoholic and tell people what drove him to reform all on his own accord, assuming that really happened, since that''s a rare occurrence. It''s possible that many could have been inspired by his story.

As if in direct response to such criticisms, Rob brushes past it in the latest work ala "It doesn''t take a genius to figure out..." and " ....so yada yada yada" style.

You know, that is perfectly fine. What he did in his second book is reinforce that he doesn''t need to go into that and the first "omission" was not an oversight. The guy still has a career. What is the point of throwing up dirt?. He does throw out a moving rehab story, involving someone else. The story is so gut-wrenching that it seemed almost out of place in the book and some cynical types would say that Rob said to himself"okay, you want the DARK side? I''ll give it to you. Here is the story of ''this guy''. Pretty bad, huh?"

Oh well big deal. That is not what most readers want. It''s just one person''s observation. What''s important about the book is that it''s not a re-hash at all. His first one is a huge must-read and highly recommended. This latest one is just about new, interesting experiences that have happened to a guy that can tell a story, and while he is at it, he has a few more really good ones to tell that didn''t quite make it into the first one

After reading his first volume and enjoying it, I thought this one would be more chronological and involved insight into how his marriage has stayed viable when he has a very complicated life with all sorts of temptations....
not so...
He writes about his older son in one section and about being a dad in general...he is very complimentary about his wife but doesn''t really give any insight into how they make it work.
He is pretty honest though about his drinking problem and going into rehab...

The book is shorter--more episodic--and kind of just jumps from topic to topic...
Maybe he had this stuff already done and they decided not to put it in the first book--maybe he has been too busy too write more...what he wrote is interesting but just felt it wandered....
Doesn''t really touch on his relationships with his brothers...but he does have some honest insight into what acting is all about...don''t think I could stand the irrational nature of most of it...

There is one really scary episode about when he and his wife were almost trampled by a mob in Vegas after a boxing match---much like the event that apparently just took place after a recent Vegas bout--looks like the hotels staging these things haven''t learned anything about crowd control...

Rob Lowe''s second book, "Love Life," is a seamless continuation and expansion of his first wonderful book, "Stories I Only Tell My Friends."

The two book titles and covers are rich with meaning.

The "Stories" title invites us all to be Rob''s friends. He peers at us through cupped hands with a questioning expression. He''s feeling his way through being an author. Many who assumed such a beautiful, successful creature must be a self-centered narcissist were intrigued, dropped presumptions, read the book and were blown away by Rob''s intelligence, candor, passion for life, vulnerability, courage, and most of all his ability to love deeply.

Now with more maturity and confidence Rob''s new title and photo cover instruct us, and we''re ready to take his lead.

He does not disappoint. The first book is like a ride on a two-prop airplane, watching Rob''s life evolve from a low height.

The second book is like flying a small jet at smooth altitude, seeing big chunks of mountain ranges instead of mountainsides, seeing the horizon instead of the mist above the ocean, and seeing deeper into the human soul.

You don''t need to read the first book to enjoy the second one, and reading the second one first will take nothing away from reading the first one second. Did I say that right? You know what I mean.

Thanks for this beautiful story Rob. Once again, you made me smile, nod, shrug, curse, cry, laugh, love, and you''ve re-energized me to keep pursuing dreams while tasting every moment.

Keep ''em coming!

I have always been an unabashed fan of Rob Lowe, since my teenage years when I would gorge myself on his movies and everything ''brat pack'', and I also enjoyed his first autobiography ''Stories I Only Tell My Friends'', which went into detail about the Outsiders and all the actors involved in it. Love Life is a more emotional read, mostly due to it being written when Rob Lowe''s son was about to go off to college. He shares his feelings with the reader about fatherhood and how much it means to him, and the love he has for his children. Such openness prompted me to shed a tear or two. But it also contains humour: I found myself laughing out loud at the thought of the headline ''Rob Lowe shot dead in forest, mistaken for Big Foot'' or ''Rob Lowe''s secret fetish: dressing up as Big Foot and roaming forest making wild mating calls''. Hilarious tale. Rob Lowe writes fluidly, easily engaging the readers with lots of little anecdotes and a ton of name dropping. And he hooks the read in within the first few pages with a story about a vibrator. He clearly knows what he is doing as a writer as well as an actor. In Love Life he speaks a great deal about his acting career and goes in to detail about acting itself. As a Drama Student back in my college years, I found this interesting and it gave me further insight into what life as an actor is truly like. The book finishes off on another emotional note, when he talks about his marriage and his wife, and gives some profound observations on life and relationships. Rob shares deep feelings and thoughts with the reader, bringing them that little bit closer. I found his open, vulnerability endearing and special. I would definitely recommend this book.

Laugh out Loud moments all the way through. This book goes a bit deeper into the rehab season of his life. It feels like to me, that the 2nd book LITERALLY takes off another layer about him as a person. I also love all the wisdom gained by taking the decsions he chose to take, good or bad, he owns them, and he writes so beautifully when detailing these little nuggets. I had an emotional moment when reading the story in his rehab, counter balanced by his humour. Honestly, I missed a few stops while travelling on a train to work, while reading. Its honest, funny, thought provoking and real. FYI, it has a lot of film and acting references, which I appreciated as I worked in the industry myself. But because he writes its so well, you don''t get lost, you appreciate it the complexity of it. An easy read, super funny and real. End of.
